Promotion of Climate Smart Agriculture for Improved Productivity & Sustainable Livelihoods

Over 700 Farmers Witness GIZ Pilot Project Launch in Southern and Central Provinces

In a major step toward advancing sustainable agriculture and climate resilience in Zambia, more than 700 farmers from Central and Southern Provinces participated in the official launch of the GIZ-supported pilot project implemented by the Conservation Farming Unit (CFU) in October 2025. The launch attracted over 400 farmers in Mumbwa District and an additional 300 farmers from Southern Province.

The project, titled “Promotion of Climate Smart Agriculture for Improved Productivity and Sustainable Livelihoods,” is implemented with support from GIZ through its compensACTION programme. The initiative compensates smallholder farmers for ecosystem services while promoting the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. The programme is further supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and aligns with broader global efforts to improve food security, strengthen climate resilience, and safeguard natural resources.

Through this initiative, CFU aims to reach over 52,000 farmers across Zambia. In Mumbwa District alone, approximately 9,000 farmers are expected to directly benefit from the project. In addition, 32,400 farmers will receive training through the Farmer Coordinator Model, while 19,600 farmers will benefit from mechanization support, roadshows, early land preparation initiatives, and field days.

The launch marked another milestone in CFU’s commitment to empowering smallholder farmers with sustainable and climate-smart agricultural solutions that enhance productivity, improve livelihoods, and protect the environment for future generations.
